Description & Requirements
MANTECH seeks a motivated, career and customer-oriented Senior Mechanical Designer to join our team. This position is onsite at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek–Fort Story, Virginia Beach, VA.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Develop and design complex mechanical components, fluid systems, propulsion layouts, and structural configurations for Navy small boats and combatant craft.
Create detailed engineering drawings, schematics, and layouts using AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
Perform design calculations and analyses, including mechanical load calculations, pipe sizing, fluid flow, and weight/stability assessments.
Collaborate closely with engineering, product development, and waterfront technician teams to resolve design conflicts and validate concepts.
Review, validate, and approve detailed engineering drawings, change orders, and technical specifications for accuracy and manufacturability (DFM).
Ensure all designs meet strict regulatory, safety, industry, and military standards (e.g., ABYC, NAVSEA, and DoD codes).
Oversee and participate in prototype development, testing, and failure troubleshooting for design and manufacturing issues.
Maintain meticulous project documentation, configuration management records, and technical design histories.
Requires occasional travel to Chesapeake, VA, and within the United States for site visits.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED
7+ years of specialized experience in mechanical design, preferably within a marine or naval defense environment.
Expertise utilizing CAD software (AutoCAD and SolidWorks) to generate high-quality engineering drawings from "as-built" or conceptual documentation.
Experience with manufacturing processes, materials science, and core mechanical engineering principles.
Hands-on experience with analytical and troubleshooting, handling complex manufacturing or prototyping issues.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills to articulate technical details across engineering and client teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or technical certification in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
Specific design experience with U.S. Navy small boats, combatant craft, or amphibious assault craft systems.
Demonstrated experience in Project Management or leading engineering design tasks
Clearance Requirements:
US citizenship required and a current or active Secret clearance.
Physical Requirements:
You must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
You will need to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets and office machinery.
This role frequently communicates with co-workers, management, and customers, which may involve delivering presentations.
You must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
The projected compensation range for this position is $64,600.00-$107,100.00. There are differentiating factors that can impact a final salary/hourly rate, including, but not limited to, Contract Wage Determination, relevant work experience, skills and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location (For Remote Opportunities), education and certifications as well as Federal Government Contract Labor categories.
