MANTECH seeks a motivated, career and customer-oriented Naval Architect to join our team in Chesapeake, VA. This is an onsite position.
The Naval Architect will leverage their strong technical background and knowledge to support Military Sealift Command (MSC) maritime engineering and design efforts, to include managing structural form, strength, and stability for various naval crafts and sea surface ships. You will help ensure the operational characteristics of waterborne vessels meet mission-critical standards through professional architectural and scientific analysis.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Managing and performing professional architectural work relating to the form, strength, stability, and performance of marine structures and waterborne vessels.
Conducting detailed Structural Analyses and Finite Element Analyses (FEA) to ensure the integrity of hull and deck arrangements.
Developing complex Rigging, Cargo Handling, and Lifesaving Systems Analyses alongside Weight and Moment Reports.
Performing Hydrostatics, Intact and Damage stability calculations, and Inclining Experiment Calculations to verify vessel safety.
Executing Mooring Studies, Material Analyses, Weld and Connection Analyses, and Vibration Analyses for diverse naval crafts.
Supporting the Military Sealift Command (MSC) by providing expert engineering oversight for a variety of ship classes and expeditionary vessels.
Working with all stakeholders to ensure complete and functioning maritime systems that meet all performance and operational requirements.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master's Degree in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field
7+ years of experience with specialized vessels such as Expeditionary Fast Transport Vessels (T-EPF), Hospital Ships (T-AH), Dry Cargo/Ammunition Ships (T-AKE), Underway Replenishment Oilers (T-AO), Cable Laying/Repair (T-ARC), Rescue/Salvage Ships (T-ARS), Submarine Tender (T-AS), Fleet Ocean Tugs (T-ATF), Command Ship (LCC), Expeditionary Mobile Base (T-ESB), Fast Combat Support Vessels (T-AOE) or like vessels
Significant experience with vessel stability calculations, mooring analysis, towing plans, ship salvage, and dry-docking operations
Expertise in complex hull structures, arrangements, outfitting, and structural analysis
Experience performing finite element analysis (FEA) and closed-form solutions for maritime platforms
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with Optimoor and FEMAP/ANSYS (or similar software), MathCAD, Adobe Pro, AutoCAD, and MS Office Suite.
Self-starter with excellent people skills - able to work across teams and drive change throughout the MSC engineering organization.
Clearance Requirements:
An active Secret clearance is required for this position.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
Needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, climb ladder wells on vessels, etc.
Frequently communicates with co-workers, management, and customers, which may involve attending meetings.
Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
